Ibanez cranked out their Soundtank series for nearly a decade, and while most of the models were lackluster, a few stood out like the CR-5 Crunchy Rhythm, the MF-5 Modern Fusion, and this, The FZ-5 60's Fuzz. If you can get past the questionable plastic construction and the turtle-shaped housing, this is a really tasty fuzz. The voicing hearkens back to the very early days of fuzz before everything went high gain and nutso. This is a fairly fat fuzz with a clean quality that lets just enough of your guitar through to provide some definition to leads and simple chords. Think of that wide and squished sound in "Satisfaction" and you'll get a picture of what you can conjure up here. These are still hanging around mom and papa-type shops and scoring one for under $40.00 is not unheard of. |
