Dunlop reissued the Fuzz Face back in the early 90s. These are fine sounding units but they fall a little short of capturing that same warm fuzziness as the original Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Faces. Apparently, the Germanium transistors used to generate the fuzz can vary greatly from unit to unit, so a side by side sampling is your best best for finding th right one. Most people looking for that Arbiter sound end up buying the reissue Dunlops and installing better sounding transistors. For the less electronically inclined amoung us, there are tons of reputable Mod sites on the internet that will upgrade the Dunlops for a reasonable price. Based on the collector prices of the originals, this seems like the best route for finding the perfect fuzz. Plus, you still get the saucer-shaped cases that are the utmost in sci-fi cool. |
